Victorian Hairstyles

When researching Victorian hairstyles I found that they ranged from some simple and plain designs to elaborate and fancy styles. Victorian hairstyles are still admired by women of today and incorporated into fashion shows. Some key hairstyles I found while researching are shown below:

Women’s hair of this era was very long and therefore was often put up in interesting ways. The Victorian hairstyle often featured a middle parting, being simple and sleek, they didn’t cut the hair it would be very long. The early Victorian bun would be at the back and low down so women could wear hats, they would also add detailing of flowers and hats.

Miss Havisham’s hairstyle throughout the film would have been a Georgian style as her hair stays the same throughout the film from her wedding day. 1820/30 featured the Marcel wave and Apollo knot, shown in the images below. This would have been a hairstyle that Estella wore in her teens going more towards the 1830’s. As Estella gets older her hair also gets more romantic, looser curls and having a slightly off parting.

At the time 1840/50 the hairstyle of curls down the side of the face came in, and in the late 50s the curls got looser. To get the curls that would have used a tong, heated up by the fire.
